International Environmental Education Day 2026
At Intaka Island, International Environmental Education Day is more than a date on the calendar.
It reminds us of our “Why”. Why we do what we do, why what we do is so important, and why our protected green space in the heart of Cape Town matters so deeply. At the same time, we recognise that environmental education extends beyond the canals of Intaka Island. It is a constant and ongoing effort to gain knowledge and put that knowledge into action. Here at Intaka Island, we make a conscious effort to educate all our visitors, online communities and the bright minds at the various schools involved in our Rangers on the Road initiative.
What Is International Environmental Education Day?
This day is dedicated to raising awareness about environmental challenges, and empowering people by connecting them to nature in meaningful ways through environmental education. At Intaka, we don’t simply teach about the ecosystem, we teach in it. Transforming nature from a concept to an informative experience to help our visitors truly understand, value, and care for the natural world through direct engagement and meaningful learning.
Environmental education encourages sustainable behaviour, builds a sense of responsibility and care for nature, while empowering communities to protect local ecosystems and, hopefully, inspiring future eco-conscious individuals.
Intaka Island's Role In Education
Environmental Education is an integral part of who we are at Intaka Island.
A wide range of our Environmental Education lessons are based on the Natural Science CAPS Curriculum offered in most schools in South Africa, which are presented by our Rangers on the Road, and the many schools that visit us weekly at Intaka Island.
Our sustainable onsite classroom gives learners the opportunity to learn all about our grey and black water systems, biodigester, composter, worm farm and solid waste recycling system, while our energy classroom promotes the education of renewable energy sources and is equipped with working energy models to show learners the energy consumption of Intaka Island Eco-Centre.
Rangers On The Road Programme
Every week schools from across the city and province visit Intaka Island to engage with its educational offerings. We do recognise that for no-fee schools this is not always possible and so “Intaka Island Rangers on the Road” was launched, bringing Intaka’s educational experience directly to these schools.
This interactive roadshow includes a presentation on sustainability and waste recycling, providing a foretaste of the valuable in depth educational programs and lessons Intaka offers. As part of The Intaka Island Environmental Trust, these schools are then invited on a partially sponsored visit to Intaka Island to partake in the practical outdoors program where learning comes to life.
Intaka Island offers individual lesson plans suitably tailored to every grade, ensuring every educational experience at Intaka is not only informative and exciting but also relevant to the academic requirements of students at every grade level.
Intaka Island Kids Club
The Intaka Island Kids Club provides a world of discovery for young adventurers.
Junior explorers engage in a multitude of hands-on activities, guided nature walks, birdwatching excursions, and eco-friendly crafts, all designed to foster a deep appreciation for the environment. From learning about local flora and fauna to understanding the importance of conservation, every adventure is a lesson.
The Kids Club provides a safe and supervised environment for children to observe and learn about the fascinating creatures on Intaka Island. Best of all, each child receives a welcome package upon signing up, making the opportunity to learn a fun and inviting experience.
Everything we do at Intaka Island is centered around environmental education, and so we believe that informed, inspired individuals are key to a more sustainable future.
