A Joint Partnership between Intaka Island & Long March to Freedom
Schools in Cape Town have a brand-new, highly unique educational outing that bridges History and Geography.
This interactive, outdoor programme combines the deep historical lessons of Long March to Freedom (LMTF) with the geographic and environmental studies of the Intaka Island.
Tailored to the standard CAPS curriculum for Grades 4–7, this combined programme provides an all-inclusive, highly interactive experience that brings classroom textbooks to life.
The full combined programme runs for 4 hours from 09:00 – 13:00, Monday to Friday. The below serves as a guideline, but can be customised based on a school’s specific transport constraints and requirements.
- 09:00: School arrives at Long March to Freedom, with GABS bus or own transport
- 09:30 – 10:30: Long March to Freedom History Program | Lesson + statues visit + report back
- 10:30 – 11:00: Lunch break + School departs Long March to Freedom to travel to Intaka Island, 5 minutes drive away
- 11:00 – 12:30: Intaka Island Geography Program | Guided walk + outdoor/indoor lesson + boat ride
- 13:00: School departs Intaka Island, with GABS bus or own transport
The experience begins at Long March to Freedom, where school groups will be welcomed with a special goodie bag before embarking on an immersive History lesson that brings South Africa’s remarkable heritage to life.
After completing the outdoor history lesson, and an engaging quest through the field of life-sized depictions of historical figures, learners will receive a small lunch pack before continuing to Intaka Island for the second part of their adventure. Here, they will enjoy an engaging Geography lesson, including a guided island walk that connects with key Natural Sciences concepts, followed by an educational boat ride through the island’s unique wetland ecosystem.
This carefully curated programme offers an inspiring blend of history, geography and environmental education, creating a memorable learning experience beyond the classroom.
Intaka Island has identified 5 main themes for geography lessons – which will go along with our current natural science lessons out on the island.

- Map Skills (Geography: Term 3)
- Vegetation (Geography: Term 3)
- Water in South Africa (Geography: Term 4)
Focused heavily on South African heritage and liberation history. Existing lesson materials can be referenced or downloaded directly HERE via LMTF Resources Page. Learners receive a hard-copy worksheet on-site.
- Standard Rate: R120 per scholar (Applies to Quintile 5 schools, private schools, academies, and home-schooling groups)
- ‘No-Fees’ School Rate: R100 per scholar
- Sponsorships: Available for Quintile 1-4 schools, community groups, church/youth groups, and NPOs without the means to arrange a visit, with preference given to recommendations by the Western Cape Department of Education.
Intaka Island centralises and administers all school bookings for this joint Social Science Programme.
