Meet McKyla!
Intaka Island is entering an exciting new era as we welcome McKyla Britz as our new Eco-Centre Manager, a role that beautifully blends her passion for education, environmental stewardship and community engagement.
With seven years of experience as a devoted teacher, McKyla brings with her a deep love for learning and an energising enthusiasm for nature. She holds both a Bachelor’s Degree and an Honours Degree in Education, and her step into conservation-focused environmental education is a natural evolution of her interests and values.
For McKyla, environmental learning is about more than facts, it’s about sparking curiosity, nurturing wonder and empowering the next generation to value and protect the natural world. As she explains, “Just as a young plant grows straight when tended with care, so too can a child’s mind flourish when nurtured with knowledge and curiosity.”
Her philosophy aligns perfectly with Intaka Island’s vision of creating meaningful, accessible and inspiring experiences that connect people, especially young people, to nature.
In her new role, McKyla is focused on amplifying Intaka Island’s environmental education legacy while celebrating its rich biodiversity and immersive visitor experiences.
Her Vision Includes:
- Expanding outreach to ensure more schools, including under-resourced communities, can access nature-based education.
- Creating dynamic workshops and guided tours that introduce visitors of all ages to sustainability, wetland ecology and the island’s abundant plant and birdlife.
- Growing partnerships with teachers, community organisations and environmental groups to extend Intaka’s presence and impact beyond its borders.
McKyla hopes to help Intaka Island continue thriving as a place where conservation, learning and community come together. She aims to enhance its identity as a harmonious, functional and educational sanctuary: a rare and precious green space in the heart of the city.
