Hermannia Procumbens Subspecies Procumbens

Let’s learn about threatened vegetation!

To expand our existing Educational Gardens, we have introduced a new and unique addition: the Rare and Endangered Species Garden. This garden plays a vital role in promoting seed dispersal across the salt pans, encouraging the growth of these rare species over time and providing a variety of plants for the Intaka Nursery team to propagate. Located just a few meters from the beehives, it also attracts the bees that pollinate many of these plants.

The Rare and Endangered Species Garden focuses on plants threatened by extinction, emphasising the importance of conservation. Intaka Island has carefully selected species that thrive in the island’s soil, creating a remarkable new feature that supports biodiversity and conservation efforts.

The following rare and endangered species have been planted with different flowering seasons that will keep the garden vibrant.

Hermannia procumbens subspecies procumbens (Critically Endangered)

 – Cliffortia ericifolia (Endangered) – Serruria aemula (Critically Endangered) – Agathosma glabrata (Endangered) – Lampranthus stenus (Endangered) – Lampranthus debilis (Endangered) – Lampranthus explanatus (Near Threatened) – Lampranthus stenopetalus (Vulnerable) – Ruschia geminiflora (Vulnerable) – Jordaaniella anemonifolia (Critically Endangered – Possibly Extinct).

Considering the extinction threat these special plants are faced with, it was crucial to have species such as – Lampranthus emarginatus, Lobostemon fruticosus, Roepera flexuosa and Athanasia trifurcate to add as soil covering element to encourage the establishment of threatened species, which suggested about 65% coverage.

Amongst other qualities, these rare and endangered species play a vital role in retarding the occurrence of negative environmental impacts such as erosion as they are compatible with the vegetation type and strive in such environments.

Visit Intaka Island to find out more about these amusing species.
